Excerpts from Autism in the School Aged Child
How to Use
This book is designed
for use by both parents and educators and is intended to
promote continuity between the home and school environments. Its colorful, easy to read format and straight-forward approach to intervention make
it a practical tool for anyone dedicated to maximizing the
potential of the child with autism. Ten chapters are directed
to the education of the high-functioning child within the classroom setting. Ten chapters address the development of success and independence within the family or home setting.
The established principles of behavioral intervention, which
are instrumental in the education of children with autism, are expanded and adapted to these “real-world” settings where the need for structure, predictability, and routine
persist. Any child who has benefited from a systematic behavioral approach is likely to benefit from the expansion of these principles across a variety of settings.
Developing Participation
This sample page introduces the chapter in which classroom strategies for the development
of participation are presented. All chapters in the book
include an introduction to the topic, the domain in which
the topic is discussed, the approach to success through specific
intervention, and detailed examples. The characteristics
of language and social impairment unique to autism are considered in the goal of participation in the general education setting. A systematic approach is presented that includes specific
strategies and examples for moving from responding to initiating
a variety of contributions in both individual and group settings.
Examples
This sample page shows the examples that are plentiful throughout the book. These and all examples are reproducible and adaptable for immediate use, making implementation easy
and practical for both parents and educators. Examples included
target behaviors, suggested prompts, expected outcomes, and problem solving strategies. These examples are useful for a variety of purposes, including assisting the teacher or classroom aide, developing an individual education plan,
and providing long-range goals.
First Grade Checklist
This sample page depicts specific
examples of target behaviors within the school setting. Adaptable
for use in both the general or special education classroom,
it is suitable for use with an aide. The systematic approach
of identifying target behaviors rewarding desirable responses,
and achieving mastery that began with discrete trials is
expanded first to activity-specific tasks, then to skill-specific
tasks. Acquisition of information-seeking skills and problem
solving strategies are incorporated with a view toward independence.
Home Checklist
This sample page depicts specific examples
of target behaviors within the home setting. The need for structure, predictability, and routine can easily be incorporated into the home environment, promoting the independence and
success that expanded behavioral strategies are designed
for. Life skills are individually targeted and acquired in
the same fashion as academic material, utilizing the skills
and abilities that the child has gained at school.
Token Economy
This sample page introduces the chapter on
the use of a token economy, a system that allows the child with autism to receive positive reinforcement in settings beyond discrete trials. The use of reinforcement is foundational to the premise that “behavior that is rewarded will be repeated.” A token economy is a tool, contributing
to delayed gratification and ongoing success. It plays an essential role in the acquisition of desired behavior, knowledge, and skill that produce long-term gains in the child with autism.
